The Oscars took place on March 11th and there were many things to talk about in the fallout of the massive awards show. A few highlights included Oppenheimer winning ‘Best Picture’, Cillian Murphy winning ‘Best Actor’, Emma Stone winning ‘Best Actress’, and John Cena was naked on national television.

His appearance has received mixed reactions on social media with some people seeing the comedic value in the moment, some are saying it was highly inappropriate of Cena to do this when children watch the Oscars. Some people are even calling it a “Hollywood Humiliation Ritual.” 

It was a memorable moment in Oscars’ history for sure, whether you have admiration or disdain for seeing John Cena’s “naked” body on television. There is footage of Cena wearing a nude-colored covering over his private area and him holding the envelope containing the winner of best costume design over his private area. Once it was time for him to present the award, he changed into a gold toga during the commercial break, so he was covered.

Ambrosians were asked for their reactions on being able to see too much of John Cena and they gave their takes on the moment.

Senior Laney Gonzalez said, “I thought it was funny but at the same time Katy Perry had her [lower back] out and she was chastised for it. It feels very double standardy, like if a woman did what John Cena did, she would be ostracized and treated like the scum of the earth.”

Freshman Grace Hagerman says, “The only thing about it, I know is people were saying how funny and what not, but they were getting mad at Katy Perry for being too ‘revealing’.” 

“I don’t really have an opinion on it one way or another, I just thought it was odd,” says junior Andrew Wirth. He goes on to elaborate by saying there are other things Cena could’ve done, “You would think entertainment hasn’t stooped so low that we resort to nudity on public tv.”

While some students focused on the societal impact of the huge Oscar’s moment, another took a less passionate approach to their feelings on the former WWE wrestler/actor. 

Sophomore Jeremiah Morris was flabbergasted when he saw the video on social media, “I remember seeing that and I didn’t know that was real, yeah that was crazy I didn’t know what to think when I saw it. I like John Cena, he got his stepping stone from the WWE.”

The entire world has a memory that they will never forget and will be brought up every year when it is time for the Oscars. This moment sparks up a debate of what should be ok and allowed on television in the year 2024, as well as double standards when it comes to how unfairly women are judged in society and in the media.
