SAU The Buzz’s Grant Mason brings a deep dive into the new addition to campus, Electric scooters. Students say the scooters give them the ability to travel faster to class, their sport practices, and many more places around the university in an eco-friendly manner. Many students expressed their excitement and concern for them. 

DAVENPORT, IA- On campus, the introduction of electric scooters has completely changed campus mobility. The narrative centers on a varied mix of students as they use the new convenience of electric scooters to navigate college life. The football team is most known for using them on the St. Ambrose campus.

SAU Sophomores Jeremiah Crawford and Charlie Flynn show the Ambrose community how great they can be on campus. Crawford said, “The scooter is very helpful and it helps me get back and forth from facility to practice.” 

However other student-athletes like Luka Stanisic have differing views on the dangers of scooters. Stanisic said, “People can get to class faster, but I think they can get dangerous, especially in certain weather conditions.” Questions abound about the safety for both the rider and the people around the scooter who may be caught off guard when a scooter comes whizzing by.

Electric scooters, or “e-scooters,” have a maximum speed of around 15 km/h and a rechargeable battery that can run them for 20 to 60 kilometers between charges. GPS systems are installed on shared service e-scooters to guarantee that users can find them with ease. However, some concerns are that the scooters are only sometimes reliable, and acceptable, and there are limited range and parking problems.

That said, Jeremiah assures us that the benefits outweigh the negatives. “The scooters overall make the campus a better place to learn, work, play, and have fun with the people you love.”
