Model United Nations (MUN) is an annual conference at which various United Nations simulate key activities. Representing a variety of countries, students – called “delegates” – sit in on General Assembly committees, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the International Press Delegation, and the International Court of Justice.

Each year students have the opportunity to attend two conferences, one in Chicago and the other in St. Louis where they get the chance to explore a wide range of current global issues concerning international conflicts like terrorism, nuclear weapons, HIV/AIDS, human rights, population, poverty, trade, energy, globalization, and the environment.

This year, some of SAU students traveled to New York City from April 1-5. During the conference, our students represented the Syrian Arab Republic in different committees with the goal of debating on a specific topic under the United Nations framework.

Political Science major Brett Jones, who was a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency said, “For me, the most important thing is just making connections with people not just around America, but the world.”

Preparation in which students have to engage to prepare for their roles as delegates include researching their country’s positions on topics discussed in committees, comprehensive analysis of its stances on multifaceted issues such as treaties, and understanding prevailing global affairs as well as practicing public speaking and diplomatic negotiation techniques.

Junior Hesham Goodman said, “Engaging in Model UN activities enhances career prospects by honing essential skills like public speaking, negotiation tactics, research abilities, and teamwork. These skills are invaluable in professions related to international relations, law, and diplomacy.”

Even though for some students it may be their first time speaking in such a big scenario, in front of more than 2,000 other students, with mentorship from Professor Duk Kim, PhD, students can develop their ability to express their thoughts persuasively and effectively before such an audience.

Goodman believes that “Participating in Model UN significantly deepened our understanding of global issues and international relations dynamics. It provided immersive insights into diplomatic negotiations, broadened our understanding of diverse perspectives, and fostered empathy and a global collaborative spirit.”

Students from all around the world attend these conferences looking for the experience only a selected fewcan receive, “Meeting delegates from various countries, such as Morocco, Dominican Republic, France, and Nepal, was a highlight of the experience,” Goodman added.

SAU’s MUN also hosts a high school summer camp and are very active on campus by participating in different events such as Bee the Difference Day, Community Day, and Destination Leadership. They usually deliver food to help raise money for a cause twice a year. To learn more about Model United Nations and how to join, visit their website or contact Professor Duk Kim, PhD.
