SAU Weekly’s Dave Girgenti explains how the St. Ambrose University chamber singers are partnering with Augustana’s music program to perform a piece that neither ensemble could perform alone.

Both choirs met up in Madsen Hall in the Galvin Fine Arts Center for one of their last few rehearsals.

In an unexpected yet welcomed alliance, the Ambrose Chamber Singers are joining forces with Augustana’s Chamber Singers to present Anton Bruckner’s challenging masterpiece, “Mass Number 2 in E Minor.”

For students like Matthew David, a senior from the SAU Chamber Singers, this collaboration provides not only a musical opportunity but also a chance to witness different methodologies and atmospheres in the rehearsal room. “It’s really cool to hear all the music with the full group finally and see kind of how another school runs things,” David says. “It’s a really cool experience so far.”

Jack Schieferdecker, also a senior from SAU Chamber Singers, echoed the sentiment of gratitude, acknowledging the complexity of the piece and expressing appreciation for the collaborative effort. “I’m glad we are having the collaborative venture because this music is really difficult,” Schieferdecker says. “It’s cool that we’re able to do that.”

Performing “Bruckner’s ‘Mass Number 2 in E Minor” is no small feat for either program individually. However, by combining their talents and resources, the choirs aim to deliver a fuller and more vibrant sound without straining their voices. This collaborative endeavor serves not only as a testament to the dedication of these students but also as a celebration of the unifying power of music.
