Club Hockey at SAU

If there is one thing you need in hockey, it is a goaltender. Starting goalie for the St. Ambrose club hockey team is senior, Thomas Shultz.

Since SAU does not have a real hockey team, he has been on the club team for all four years and is stepping into a leadership role this season as club president. The team’s current project is looking for people to join.

“We are constantly looking for more people to play on our team,” Shultz said. “We had 10 seniors graduate last year, leaving us with some empty spots that we are looking to fill. If you are looking to play or have any questions regarding the team, you may contact me as the club president.”

The team welcomes players of all skill levels. Shultz has been playing some form of hockey his whole life but others have joined the club without playing a game before. They accept anyone who loves the game and is willing to learn.

“One of the main goals of the St. Ambrose Hockey team is to get people who enjoy the sport of hockey to get out on the ice, regardless of skill level,” Shultz said. “We have had members play their very first game with this program and have improved greatly since first stepping on the ice. I think that the members that our club has had in the past have done a great a job introducing students to the sport we all love.”

The season runs from October to March, and they get together to play or practice once or twice a week. They have some off ice practices but when they are on ice they play at the iWireless center on the same ice as the Quad City Mallards.

Shultz said his favorite part about being on the club the past few years has been meeting new people.

“One of my favorite aspects of playing hockey on the club team at St. Ambrose is the people that I have met along the way. I made a handful of friends along the way and look forward to this upcoming year,” Shultz said.
