After a 12 hour celebration of life and love, the SAU community heard the news they’d been waiting to hear for the last year. The fourth annual Dance Marathon raised more than $186,000 for the kiddos.

“Raising $186,000 for the kids is astonishing, and more than I ever could have hoped for,” Dance Marathon Co-Director Brennan Leonard said.

On March 5, St. Ambrose University students, faculty, alumni and guests joined together in the Rogalski Center Ballroom with miracle families for Dance Marathon 4. St. Ambrose University sponsors many families near the Quad Cities. All of the money that is raised by SAU DM stays in the area and helps these children and others at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.

The event keeps all of the participants busy. If the kiddo talent show featuring Fred’s toe touches and the lip sync battle between Kenzie and Reagan wasn’t enough entertainment, the event had other activities to keep everyone energized and moving. Laser tag, miracle cup challenges and a Zumba hour led by Helene DeVine gave all in attendance a fun way to stay on their feet.

Between the activities, miracle families were invited to the stage to share their stories to remind the dancers why they really are doing this.

From the second Dance Marathon 3 ended, preparation for Dance Marathon 4 began. Applications are taken for the executive board almost immediately and the committees begin to form. Without the different committees, so many tasks could not have been accomplished throughout the year.

Alyssa Wiley, Communications Chair stayed busy during the event, but never lost sight of what the end goal is for all schools hosting Dance Marathon events.

“University of Northern Iowa held their DM Saturday as well and they challenged us to raise $10,000 in just one hour.” Willey said. “We came close with raising almost $7,500 which is huge. Shout out to UNI for raising $370,000 last weekend!”

Claire Swift, Morale Captain and SAU senior couldn’t have been more proud of her team, or the cause that she has spent the last four years supporting.

“I strive to push my dancers to raise as much money as they can,” Swift says.

Her drive and dedication led Team 1 to raise a total $16,093, surpassing their individual fundraising goal of $15,000 while at the event.

Even though SAU’s DM fell a little short of their fundraising goal of $200,000, the dancers are still extremely happy with the amount of money that they raise.

“Although our goal was to reach $200,000, we could not be more proud of every dancer, committee member, volunteer and executive board member for playing a huge part in raising $186,000 for the kids,” Wiley said.
